![]() ![]() After all, Ian McShane is hard to watch as the grimy Dickensian villain on ''Deadwood," yet he's on the list, as he should be.Īlso, a few supporting ''Rescue Me" actors deserved nods, notably Callie Thorne as a 9/11 widow trying to recover a sense of pleasure. But the truth is probably less sympathetic and has more to do with Hollywood politics. He more than earned a nomination, as did supporting actress Famke Janssen for her formidable turn as a mysterious and sharklike life coach.Īnd as an alcoholic New York firefighter in ''Rescue Me," Denis Leary was as dimensional as nominee Keifer Sutherland was flat in ''24." I wish I could say Leary was ignored because he was so effectively disturbing on the show, as his caustic Tommy spiraled out of control. Last season on ''Nip/Tuck," Dylan Walsh was extraordinary as a plastic surgeon feverishly struggling with conscience and marital discord. Indeed, the absence of ''Nip/Tuck" and ''Rescue Me" among all of the major categories qualifies as a major Emmy snub. And they revolve around themes - American narcissism and post-9/11 trauma, respectively - that make them as thought-provoking as they are entertaining. But the slipping ''Six Feet Under" and ''West Wing" take up important slots that surely belong to FX's two groundbreaking shows ''Nip/Tuck" and ''Rescue Me." These series, both blackly comic and dramatic, are beautifully written and smartly conceived. The best drama category is solid enough, with deserving nods to ''Deadwood," ''Lost," and ''24," which had its tightest season yet. Rather than reflecting a year of quality, these and other disappointing nominations reflect an academy bent on acting like an exclusive club. Tyne Daly, ''Everybody Loves Raymond" and its cast, Jane Kaczmarek, ''The West Wing," Stockard Channing - they all seem to appear simply out of habit. ''Will & Grace" fell into serious disrepair many moons ago, and yet it was nominated for 15 prizes, including best comedy. And the tragically overlooked ''Scrubs" finally got props for best comedy and actor Zach Braff.īut still, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' list of hopefuls is crammed with filler, the sort of automatic inclusions that show up every year regardless of quality. ''Housewives" scored 15 nominations including best comedy, and ''Lost" grabbed 12 including best drama. ![]() ''Lost" and ''Desperate Housewives," the shows that revived a lost and desperate ABC, each earned their numerous nods. Yes, the TV institution so famous for rabid perseveration did manage to acknowledge a few new and worthy names on the list of nominees it released yesterday. ![]()
